How free refunds work
- Buy one ticket that forms a connecting ticket with another ticket
- The connecting train experiences a delay (generally ≥30 minutes)
- Refund online and receive full back to original payment
Refunding connecting tickets carries much higher risk than point extensions. Tickets for which delay information has already been maintained cannot be refunded for free as connecting tickets. Please read the instructions below carefully.
Chinese railway regulations state: when a passenger requests a refund because of a train delay but did not board, the refund should be handled at the ticket's departure station before the train's actual departure; the full fare should be refunded without a refund fee. Connecting tickets purchased before the delay information is published for the delayed train can be refunded together without a fee. Steps for a free refund
- Scroll down to the delayed trains table
- The table aggregates nationwide delayed trains in real time, no need to check stations manually
- Read the section on how to use the delayed trains table to buy tickets and follow the steps
- Wait for the station system to officially update the delay information
- Start trying to refund the first leg every 2 minutes beginning 30 minutes before departure until the refund fee becomes 0 and the connecting-ticket refund option appears
- It may take 5–10 minutes from fee=0 to the connecting refund window appearing
- If refunding fails repeatedly, see troubleshooting below or contact customer service
- ⚠️ If the train returns to schedule or has departed, refunding may be impossible
- Refund the first leg by selecting the "connecting refund" option and include all related tickets
- ⚠️ Do not refund a single ticket alone
- If refunding repeatedly fails, follow the guidance below or contact customer service
- ⚠️ If the train is back on time or departed, refunding is not possible
- The previous step only submitted the request; you still need to wait for the refund.
- Typically takes 4–5 days
- Point-ticket refunds may take 2–3 days
- Check your account statements to confirm all refunds are returned
- If successful, feel free to share this tool with others

How to use the delayed trains table to buy tickets
💡 Refunding connecting tickets carries risks. Follow steps carefully to reduce risk.
🏆 Target ticket- Goal: pick one or a few tickets to purchase
- Boarding station is about to be delayed but delay not yet maintained
- Alighting station is the boarding station of a ticket you plan to refund
- For example, buy a ticket from A to B and combine it with an existing ticket from B to C to form a connecting trip
- Time from alighting to boarding is less than 24 hours
- If multiple tickets are needed, transfers at the same station within 24 hours are acceptable
Some trains may have stopped ticket sales, but you can still check subsequent stops.
From top to bottom, perform the following for each row:
- Prefer trains starting with G
- If not G, prefer provincial capital stations or Shanghai bureau stations
- Shanghai bureau includes Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui stations
- Next consider trains starting with D or C
- Avoid regular-speed trains when possible
- ⚠️ Regular-speed trains require station staff to open refund permissions and may not allow refunds
- If buying regular-speed tickets, prefer boarding at major stations
- See FAQ for details
- Boarding station is about to be delayed but delay not yet maintained (required)
- ⚠️ If delay has already been maintained, connecting refunds are not available — you cannot query maintenance status
- Alighting station must be the boarding station of the ticket you plan to refund (required)
- Time from alighting to boarding must be less than 24 hours
- If one ticket can't meet conditions, combine multiple tickets (fewer tickets is better)
- Transfer time between alighting and boarding must be under 24 hours
- Keep routes short where possible to reduce risk (optional)
- Open the 12306 app home → Station Display
- Switch to the station matching the table row
- Open the train and confirm delay >30 minutes at your boarding station (recommended >40 minutes)
- ⚠️ If delay drops below 30 minutes, refunds may not be possible
- Check if the origin station is delayed — if so, the whole trip may be maintained
- ⚠️ If delay is already maintained, connecting refunds are not available and maintenance status cannot be queried
- This step locates the delayed train and the ticket's departure station
- Whether the destination station is delayed does not matter as long as connecting conditions are met
- Observe stop durations at each station — short stops are less likely to regain on-time status
- Assess delays across all stations
- Consider weather and news
- ⚠️ If the train returns to schedule, connecting refunds and the free delay refund won't be possible
- Buy the first leg (no seat, second class or hard seat suggested)
- Recommendation: do not use points or coupons
- If less than 4 hours to departure, refund immediately; otherwise wait 30 minutes to avoid mistaken purchase refunds, then try refunding
- Check whether a refund fee is required
- If you can refund for free, maintenance is already in place — cancel and re-plan
- If you cannot refund for free, the train selection is likely valid. Do not pay for refunds
- If first-leg purchase succeeded and cannot be refunded for free, you likely picked the right train
- If your route requires multiple tickets, purchase the remaining tickets now
- Continue following the steps above as you proceed
- Be sure to check the checklist while operating

💡 Notes
- Maintenance status for delays cannot be queried. The station display's delay time is unrelated to when maintenance is applied
- To get a free connecting refund, the ticket must have been purchased before delay/stop maintenance. Tickets bought after maintenance require station window processing
- Even if the first-leg boarding station's delay is maintained, the connecting refund window may not appear immediately — wait about 10 minutes
- If someone tells you a train/station is eligible, verify again — if it is no longer delayed, free refund won't work
